Project case study 6: Competitions

Main leisure complex
1. Morecambe Promenade Competition 2005:
This competition encouraged ideas for the former Bubbles site and environs adjacent the Midland Hotel. The practice’s entry proposed a mixed use comprising apartments, shops, a museum of comedy, a leisure complex and a viewing tower to replace the existing Polo Tower. The emphasis of the design was to create something iconic, which would reflect in some ways the architecture of the 30’s Midland Hotel, currently under refurbishment by Urban Splash. The proposed architecture employed a bold use of circular forms and solid surfaces punctuated with openings to reflect the art deco of the Midland and other buildings in this area of Morecambe.
2. Water Embassy, Namibia, Southern Africa, 2006:
A competition to invent an embassy building for dealing with the anticipated world water shortage crisis in the future. The entry comprised a series of highly insulated dome shaped structures which would reflect the intense sunlight and provide a comfortable environment inside. The form would present itself as an oasis in an otherwise stark landscape.
